**** I find it interesting that Yeah Yeah Yeahs were one of many bands to break out during the post-punk revivalist movement of the early '00s, but while many were quickly panned upon successive releases for diverting from their initial appeal, Yeah Yeah Yeahs were able to avoid this. I think it's helped that despite the drastic change, they still wrote plenty of very strong songs ("Heads Will Roll", "Zero", etc).
With this album I feel they've changed up again and I was prepared to call this a counter-productive change compared to "It's Blitz!". I really wasn't feeling this album at all initially. Coming to it now, it's gotten a bit better for me. The hooks are still there, but the ideas aren't well thought out. I was convinced that they'd lost the plot, and perhaps they have, but at least for now there's something for me to get out of them. 3.7
**** It's not necessarily disappointing, just different. That being said, I don't think they'll soon top 'Fever To Tell'. This album starts well but then loses its way in the middle. Thankfully though, it's brought to an end very strongly with the final three tracks. They've gone for a dreamier sound which at times helps bring to attention the guitar riffs to a greater extent, but on other occasions this approach can tend to not come off well and it isn't very catchy. I enjoy it enough though, they've done well. 3.75
**** For me it is disappointing. I expected and wanted more after how much I enjoyed It's Blitz, and as a result I've most likely been unfair to this album. Reviewing the tracks just now I've found that they do work but this just lack the killer moments that made me love It's Blitz so much. It's a solid effort but not as good as I was hoping for.
