***** Quite quickly this became my favourite Vampire Weekend song ever. Initially I was drawn in by the pre-chorus which reminded me a lot of "Driftwood" by Travis. The vocal melody, particularly on "Anger wants a voice, voices wanna sing" felt very similar to the verses of "Driftwood", as well as both songs having lines start with the word that ended the last. As a big fan of "Driftwood", I easily took to "Harmony Hall" because of that similarity. The opening guitar melody is delightful and lovely, and matches very well with Ezra's voice here. I love how the instrumentation builds from just the guitar through the verse, with the addition of percussion through the the pre-chorus and then piano for the chorus. The instrumental bridge is an interesting move and works well, especially the use of the piano. The final chorus is a massive highlight with everything coming together for the big finale. It's an incredibly satisfying payoff. The upbeat nature of the song is a clever contrast to the aggressive nature of the lyrics. Despite clocking in at over five minutes, the song never drags and never feels like it's overstayed its welcome. This is their career highlight and will take a lot to top. |
